Additional Information

Period: c1850’s
Material: Mahogany
Origin: American

A wonderful American Ogee Clock with a 30-hour striking movement by maker Seth Thomas of Plymouth Holloway, Connecticut and unlike many Ogee clocks of the period, this one has not be subject to any significant modern restoration.

The clocks pillared Mahogany case (with excellent patina and a hinged front door containing twin glazed tablets), is in good condition and commensurate with age. The clock benefits from two nicely proportioned carved and painted marble effect side half-columns, that rest tightly between the clocks Ogee platform and top, offering the clock much visual presence and proportion.

The ivory painted metal dial is also in good general condition, with some very minor historical 'touch-up' paint work adding to the clocks character and provenance. The dials garniture is all hand-painted and original, with black Roman numerals and decorative floral patterns, the dial being finished with a pair of authentic black Fleur-De-Lys hands. The doors' lower glass tablet, also retains its original reverse hand painted artwork, depicting an unnamed white mansion house scene in a rural setting.

The highly robust Seth Thomas skeletonized Ogee movement is in fine working order and the clock comes with strings, its authentic mechanism lead weights and original top wheels and pendulum. The clock strikes its gong on the hours and half-hours with a typically deep Ogee 'tang', the brass gong hammer disc sitting on top of the Seth Thomas 'warranty, set-up and maintenance' backing paper.
