Wonderful 12-inch Welsh Drop Dial fusee Wall timepiece from c1852, by Thomas Edwards of Llangollen.

Born in Corwen 1798, Thomas Edwards was a qualified watchmaker and a publican (of both the ‘White Lion Tavern’ and ‘Harp Inn’ in Corwen), and by 1850 had joined forces with his two sons; Edward (born 1825) and John (born 1828), to design and build notable timepieces under the family business name of “Edwards”, based at Castle Street Square, Llangollen. Indeed, through the attention to detail of their high-quality horological work and craftsmanship they became well-known and much sought after in North Wales and related neighbouring counties of England.

The clocks creative Rosewood case offers an impressive octogen-shaped head over drop box that incorporates a small visible pendulum glazed aperture. The cabinet intarsia inlay includes beautifully hand-crafted Mother of Pearl floral leaf designs and stringing, creatively positioned around the frontal boundaries of the case. At the base of the clock, there is also a hinged inspection door complete with its original locking mechanism and key.

The clocks original white dial has black Roman numerals and “Edwards, Llangollen” painted onto its face, finished with its pair of original blued American Spade hands secured with a pinned collet. The dial is then protected by thick glaze mounted in a cast brass bezel.

The timepiece has a clean 8-day fusee movement with shouldered plates and comes with its original 35.5cm pendulum rod and brass bob, together with its brass winding key.

A wonderful high-quality drop dial clock of superb artistic character and a sound investment.
